As anyone who has produced a traditional book knows the work is prised from your authorial hands long before the book actually hits the bookshop shelves. So when James Joyce's Dublin finally appeared in 2004 we were already making corrections and amendments to the text as we uncovered further information. We were fortunate that Thames & Hudson had allowed Ian Gunn to design and typeset the original publication as this has enabled us to maintain a 'live' updated version in the lab. It is now over ten years since that original launch and the ongoing revised book contains - along with corrections and amendments - additional material including maps and pictures. The on-going revised version is currently 40 pages larger than the 160 page original.
The original 2004 publication is still in print with Thames & Hudson and we still consider it a valuable contribution to Joyce studies. However after over ten years of revision work we had hoped to have been able to publish a revised edition before now and we feel we owe it to our many readers to give some detail on our continuing scholarship and work on the edition.
Sadly Clive Hart died in August 2016 and I regret that he never saw the revision come to fruition. Thankfully all the updates by Clive are onboard so we have not lost any of his wonderful scholarship.
Below we give a brief, but we hope helpful, description of some of the changes since the 2004 edition:
First page ref is to 2004 edition. The Second is the revised version.
